Las Abuelitas Kinship Housing
This is a Project. It was architect: Poster Frost Mirto and landscape architect: The Design Element and collaborator: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and made for (as the client) Primavera Foundation. It is dated 2012–13.
Grandparents raising grandchildren is a growing demographic across the United States. In South Tucson—a low-income, largely Hispanic, culturally rich enclave of Tucson, Arizona—a delegation of grandparents envisioned a new kind of collective housing. Designed to meet dual-generation needs, a dozen energy-efficient, secure, accessible, affordable rental units and a community building make up the Las Abuelitas (Grandmothers) Kinship Housing complex. Replacing blighted lots, the onsite community center offers after-school activities, civic-leadership training, and supportive classes for elders, youth, and the rest of the neighborhood.
