A silver necklace with a simple hook-type clasp. Single and double rows of delicate circular links connect to four evenly spaced circular decorations near the top of the necklace, ringed with curls of silver ribbons with green undersides. Three symetrical oval pendants with mirrored surfaces hang side by side at the bottom of the necklace, seperated by a single round link, rimmed with silver and green ribbon curls, each containing different pressed flower and insect specimens.

Necklace Necklace, 2015

This is a necklace. It was designed by Daniel Kruger. It is dated 2015 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is clear and mirrored arcylic, flower petals, leaves, insects, silver, pigment. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In this necklace Kruger captures the chaotic patterns of flowers and insects behind glass in the manner of traditional lockets or portrait cameos while alluding to the scientific views of organisms under a microscope.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

A beige waistcoat with small flowers, leaves, and insects are embroidered in a structured and separated pattern, ending at the pockets. The bottom shows larger dragonflies, wild grasses, branches, and more insects. Trim surrounds the standing collar and down the covered buttons.

Round white porcelain plate with wavy brown-edged rim, painted with plants and insects. At center, tall lobed bocconia leaves in shades of green, teal, and purple. At left, a spray of small round pale yellow fruits. Surrounding the large plants are the same fruits, insects, and smaller flowers. At twelve o'clock, a purple insect with wings folded, and a small fruit; at one o'clock, a sprig with clover-like pale purple flowers; at three o'clock, two small fruits and a purple and yellow butterfly; at five o'clock, small purple flowers; at six o'clock, a small fruit, and an olive green caterpillar crawling up the stem of the lobed leaf at center left.
