Collage, Candy Wear Jewelry Series, 1999

This is a Collage. It was designed by Daniel Jocz. It is dated 1999 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is photocopy and applied adhesive paper on white wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Daniel Jocz’s Candy Wear jewelry series of 1999 demonstrates a reaction to what Jocz has described as the "overtly ‘serious’ work that is being done in the US studio jewelry field today." Rather than focus on an obscure symbolic meaning behind the forms of these pieces, Jocz intends Candy Wear simply to delight both the eye and the body of the wearer. The Pop Art forms in candy colors also relate to Jocz’s conceptions of the passing pleasures of fashion trends: "Fashion to me is like candy, the kind of candy that you bought when you went to the store when you were a little kid. You buy this sweet stuff and put it in your mouth and it hits you, Kapowie! Five minutes later it’s gone." In this collage, Jocz takes a model from a fashion advertisement and adorns her with his Candy Wear X-form brooch and tiara, demonstrating the delightful contrast between the austerity of her clothing and the frivolity of his jewelry designs.

A tiara covered in a crushed velvet-like material, has a yellow-green band, and a large red sphere that rests off to the (viewers) left side of that band. Beneath the tiara band are 5 long teeth protruding, to secure the tiara in place when in use.

There are 3 pieces of jewelry in the frame: one brooch and two bracelets that are designed the same way. The brooch is in the shape of an 'X', yellow in color, and appears to have a soft, crushed velvet-like exterior. It is medium/large in size. The two bracelets are circular in shape, one fuchsia and the other orange, with a total of 5 spherical protrusions evenly spaced out, along the bracelets soft exterior. These spherical protrusions are not the same material as the bracelet, in fact, they are made of a metal substance. A metal sliver on two opposing sides of the bracelet, cuts it in half; however, both halves remain together in one piece.
