Large brooch made out of two steel and gold rectangular wire structures. The jewelry’s shape changes depending on the angle it is presented. Captured in the image, the brooch is centered on a light gray background, one of the rectangular wires facing forward, on a slight backward slant. The other rectangle intersects the former and is presented side-facing, vertically, creating the illusion that it is slimmer than the first. Subtle color differences are detailed on each rectangle. The rectangle facing forward is primarily in a dark steel color with a small gold section on its right, upper side. The rectangle that intersects is in three colors - its left side in a light steel color, a similar gold marking on its right, and the remaining section in the same darker steel color as the first.

Brooch

This is a brooch. It was designed by Leslie Leupp. It is dated ca. 1987 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is steel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This large brooch, composed of two wire rectangles set at angles to each other, presents an optical illusion, appearing both two-dimensional and three-dimensional simultaneously. Leupp's brooch seems to continually change shape as the wearer moves.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
