Brass chain-link necklace with a hook clasp fastener. Near the pendant area is an uneven arrangement of two molten tin merging into the sides of the chain. The hardened components stiffen the two bottom sections of the chain creating stationary corners. It is silver-plated and has an oxidizing effect producing darkened details to the otherwise full shiny piece. The molten tin or pendants takes the shape of spills.

Corners Necklace

This is a necklace. It is dated 2006. Its medium is molten tin poured on commercial brass chain then silver-plated and oxidized. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Mimlitsch-Gray spilled molten tin onto chain to allow random elements rather than goldsmith's practice to control the outcome. The deliberate use of plating, like applying makeup on the surface of the free form, is a transparent attempt to make precious what had been an accidental spill.

It is credited Promised gift to the Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

A digital print on non-woven paper sidewall inspired by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The designer translated the landscape into a color diagram, which was then translated into a striped wallpaper pattern using specially mixed colors created for the landscape's palette. Here we see an irregular, vertical striped pattern using varying weights and shades of purple, terracotta, white and blue.
