Brooch

This is a brooch. It is dated c. 2013. Its medium is urushi lacquer. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This brooch demonstrates Fukuchi’s contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese lacquerware as she covers the carved wooden form with multiple layers of red Urushi lacquer to accentuate the contours of its amoeba-like shape.

It is credited Promised gift to the Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
