Laura Handler worked as a jewelry designer for Cartier and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, after graduating with a degree in jewelry design from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1975. She moved to Milan to design fashion and home furnishings. Unable to get a workers' visa, Handler worked as a freelance designer for Sottsass Associati, Krizia, Pomellato, and others. In 1993, she founded her own design company in New York City, where she also teaches product design at Parsons School of Design.
