Jules Brateau was a sculptor, goldsmith, jeweler and pewterer who won the Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris, where a pewter ewer and tray made of cast and chased pewter was regarded as one of the best pieces in the exhibition. A member of the jury at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, Jules Brateau was praised in his time as the master who had revived the art of pewter, especially casting, in France .
