Nuriye Akeren received her BFA from the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg College of Fine Arts), Germany. She then studied photography and design at the Folkwang School in Essen and Italian Studies at the Instituto Italiana in Hamburg. In the early 1980’s she traveled to Florence, Italy to study weaving and ancient silk painting techniques. Following her studies she began working as a freelance designer. For the following five years she took a job designing for Rosenthal Ceramics. After this she worked at Intair Interior Design. In 2009 Akeren helped in the founding and development of Intair-Akeren Textile design, a worldwide textile design company based in Germany.
