Ranes was born in Warsaw in 1929 and raised in Paris. After World War II, she immigrated to New York City where she enrolled at Pratt Institute and in 1951 received an Art Certificate. In 1968, she moved to Palo Alto, CA and earned a master’s degree in art from Santa Clara University. Although she began her career as an abstract expressionist painter, Ranes was interested in all forms of art. She applied an abstract expressionism vocabulary to her textiles, lithographs and drawings.
