Maria "Ia" Longworth was born on March 20, 1849 to Ann Maria Rives and Joseph Longworth. In 1868 she married George Ward Nichols and eventually had two children, Joseph Longworth and Margaret Rives. In 1880, she founded the Rookwood Pottery. After the death of her husband in 1885, she married Belamy Storer in 1886. After which she left Rookwood Pottery to follow her husband's political career.

A round-bottomed, cream, glazed stoneware vase with a long, thin, cylindrical neck. Pale red wavy lines can be seen across the body and a pale red blossom is visible on the neck. A three-dimensional, hand-modeled dragon, with red scales, a blue beard and black talons and horns, has been applied to the vase, clutching to the neck and body on the right side. A section of pale blue glaze is visible on the left side.
