Maria "Ia" Longworth was born on March 20, 1849 to Ann Maria Rives and Joseph Longworth. In 1868 she married George Ward Nichols and eventually had two children, Joseph Longworth and Margaret Rives. In 1880, she founded the Rookwood Pottery. After the death of her husband in 1885, she married Belamy Storer in 1886. After which she left Rookwood Pottery to follow her husband's political career.
