Joris Laarman (b. 1979) has had a meteoric rise in the design profession since his years at the Eindhoven Design Academy. While still a student there he designed as his thesis project the Heat Wave Radiator (featured in Cooper-Hewitt's Rococo exhibition and subsequently acquired for the collection, 2008-13-1-a/c). Upon graduation in 2003, he started his own company, Joris Laarman Studio, focusing on product design and architecture. A side elevation view, facing left, of a chair design on white paper drawn to scale. The chair design flows elegantly adhering to the body’s form, starting from the neck to the lumbar region where it curves away then wraps around the seat to the back of the knees, proceeding downward aligning with the legs, touching the ground then extending flush with the ground until it aligns with the back of the seat. The structure is composed of vertebrae-like wooden segments connected by elegant dovetail joints; bent areas are constructed with several smaller segments and straight areas are constructed with longer segments. The last “bone” of the chair resembles a coccyx. The spine of the chair is drawn using value shading to create the illusion of volume whereas a separate material possibly to partially cover the chair is rendered using a line drawing. There are additional notes throughout the drawing as well as a close-up view of a connecting segment in the upper left quadrant.

A slanted metal screen with an asymmetrical design of uneven waves alternating with a symmetrical oval pattern of negative space that appears to be metal netting that was stretched showing a gradient of small to larger oval openings from bottom to top of screen. The screen wears a brushed satin finish.

An armless, legless chair in a continous serpentine form with cut out wood triangles of varying sizes pieced together to form larger polygon shapes. An irregular lattice on the entire surface gives the impression of lightness belying the chair's stability. The light color of the wood is uniform throughout.

A standalone bookshelf in a tree-like form entirely made out of bronze. It has a rectangular base with extending arms branching out of its trunk situated in the center. It has varying sized rectangular and square platforms that are raised by the different branches. The branches extend both left and right and the platforms are arranged in a way that it subtly creates a triangular overall shape.

An armless, legless chiar with althernating wave like bands of dark brown wood and white resin. The diagonal bands vary in length and start from one edge and spill over another edge; for example from top to side, side to side, side to bottom. The organic pattern mimics the fluid curves of the chair. The suble wood grain pattern contrasts with the consistent flat resin material.

Long table with branch-like or skeletal legs made out of aluminum and wolfraam carbide. Object is centered in the middle of a room with white walls and concrete floor. The table legs are in a v-shape seamlessly connecting to the tip of the tabletop. Smaller parts branch out of the legs and connect towards the center. Person in a black dress is blurred in the background behind the table, with a reflection appearing on the surface of the table.
