Jonathan Ive was born in Chingford, London, U.K. in 1967. Ive studied Industrial Design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) and began his Industrial Design career at Tangerine, a London based design start up. Ive was comissioned as a design consultant by Apple in 1992 and later became a fulltime member of Apple's design team. Notable designs during Ive's early career at Apple include the Newton personal data assistant, and the MessagePad110. In 1997, Ive became the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, with his first design assigment being the iMac. A silver, hand-held rectangular box has curved sides and small rectangular screen over circle control button panel. The circular white control button panel has the words 'Menu' and arrow symbols on the left and right for certain functions: rewind, fast forward. In the middle of the circle is another circular button used for the select function. There are white panels on top and bottom. The top has a raised switch on the left with a red indicator of its 'on' function with the words 'hold' next to it. On the right side are hole ports for cord and earphones, with small earphone ilustration to the left of it.

Bright orange, brushed metal digital audio player that can fit in the palm of your hand. It is just narrower and taller than a credit card. The side edges are rounded, though the top and bottom are flat. The top two thirds of the front has a screen, shown black. The bottom third shows a white wheel, whose edge is thinner than a fingertip, and can be pressed. There are control symbols at the top, right, bottom, and left of this wheel. Moving clockwise from the top, these icons are, the word “Menu,” two arrows pointing right to a vertical line, an arrow pointing to the right and two vertical lines, and two arrows pointing left to a vertical line.
