Born in Ukraine to French parents in 1901, Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron was raised between Kharkov and Paris. In 1917, the outbreak of revolution in Russia prompted the family to settle permanently in Paris—an incubator for young Mouron, who aspired to a painting career. Disillusioned by academic art training after a single class at the École des Beaux-Arts, Cassandre took up study at the more progressive Académie Julien, and in the studio of painter Lucien Simon. Mouron’s interest in poster design grew out of economic necessity. A lightbulb-shaped radio lamp in shades of grey and chestnut brown, set in front of a blue and yellow background, divided vertically. The lamp is positioned in front of the dividing which is offset, leaving the blue portion on the left slightly narrower. 'Miniwatt' is printed in red capital letters except for the two “i” characters; the two 't's' are connected, mimicking the shape of the tetrode at the bottom of the lamp image. 'Philips Radio' is rendered immediately underneath in solid capital black letters which are outlined in white. The lettering is justified to the right and set just above the horizontal midpoint of the poster. The artist's name, 'A.M. Cassandre,' and the number 31 are at the top right. A signature and printing notes, notably the year '1931' are printed at the bottom right corner.
