Christina Kim moved with her family to Los Angeles from Seoul, South Korea when she was fifteen. She studied painting and art history at the University of Washington, Seattle, under the mentorship of painter Jacob Lawrence. In 1984, she founded dosa, a fashion and housewares brand based in Los Angeles, with her mother, a talented designer. Kim’s designs draw on traditional textile cultures from around the world, particularly India and Oaxaca, incorporating hand-crafted textiles and labor-intensive techniques. She works with local artisans, for whom she is able to provide sustainable livelihoods by engaging in long term, collaborative relationships and paying fair wages. Here we have a wrap skirt with three layers of loosely ruffled waves that gather at the top in a thin, simple tie. On each layer, there are varying decorative elements. The top layer has repeated geometric shapes that create abstract circles reminiscent of flowers, crosses wtih pointed ends, and zigzags. Small scallops of blue run along diagonally, and there are golden circles in the middle of the pointed crosses. The middle layer has similarly abstract patterns of different zigzagging lines, one with a small hint of gold running vertically. The bottom layer has additional lines of decor, side by side in tightly repeated dots, links, and triangles. Overall, the colors are not contrasting, making the skirt appear overlapping brown, dark purple, dark gray shades.
