Richard Niessen
Graphic elements collide, converge, and overlap—more by chance than by design—in the work of Richard Niessen. Faceted spaces emerge from saturated colors and gilded planes. Working in Amsterdam as an independent designer, Niessen studied design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, graduating in 1996. Alongside professional clients that include museums and foundations, Niessen pursues collaborations, publications, and self-authored projects in the cultural realm.

Each plane is rendered in a different bright, flat color or in a checkered pattern of two colors; most feature printed text in typewriter-style font. Shapes and orientation are all askew, multiplanar objects are hidden behind one another, creating a dimensional collision of drafting/architectural tools: protractors, scales, rulers, graph paper, and grids. A red and white checkerboard pattern dominates the composition of The Plan, taking up the center of the poster and scroll-like in shape. There are copious amounts of text in multiple typefaces both serif and sans serif; some of the text is easily legible, other text is not. “TRUTH,” on black in red near the top of the poster stands out. From various points about the poster, other text reads [MASONRY] upside down, upper right, [... in becoming memorial or monumental that a true perfection is attained.”] bottom right, [TYPOGRAPHIC] bottom right, receding back into space, upside down, [...THE PLAN’, THE PALACE OF TYPOGRAPHIC MASONRY, 2011] in white, center bottom, receding back.
