Crate was probably best known as an industrial stylist for American automaker General Motors. He is credited with the patented design for a hinged cover container for carrying bottled beverages, assigned to du Pont (1964). His T-C-3 lamp won third prize in The Museum of Modern Art’s low-cost lighting design competition in 1950.
