Above a wide, square doorway, at bottom center, this horizontal composition shows a depiction of crowd gathered among trees. Seated at center is the figure of Apollo, wearing a short toga, which falls above his knees. His hair reaches to his shoulders beneath a laurel crown of leaves. He plays a curved lyre, a small stringed instrument. He is perched against a small hill, out of which four trees with thick canopies and slender trunks stand. On either side of Apollo is a group of women positioned close together in friendly postures, embracing each other or resting their heads on each other’s shoulders. They wear draped dresses and some hold other musical instruments, a flute and a horn. To the left, a bearded man looks upward between two other men, one of whom points in the direction of Apollo. To thee left of this group, man sits with one leg crossed over the other, quill in hand, ready to make note of the scene. Another slender tree to the left divides this group from another group of four, closer to the foreground, beside, rather than above, the doorway. They each wear laurel wreaths on their heads, and though their bodies all face the doorway, some of their heads are turned back toward the group, in conversation. A group of crowned figures mirrors the conversant group on the right side of the doorway, one man with hands upturned in a gesture toward the doorway. At level with the treetops, five winged babies, or cherubs, hold laurel wreaths aloft, looking down at the scene below them.
