A large crowd gathers on the banks of a river, the Jordan, in this horizontal scene. At center foreground, a child sits on the ground with back turned, one hand upraised. The child looks up toward a man in heavy robes and a brimmed cap with a long beard, facing the viewer. He is in conversation with another bearded, standing figure, whose back is turned. More people are seen standing and seated amongst trees at the far left side. Their attention is directed toward each other, giving their group a sense of motion and conversation. At the far right side, a woman stands with her back turned, holding an infant in her arms, only visible by the top of its head. Between these groups, and directly across the river from the seated child, A mostly nude man, Christ, is standing in the river, up to his thighs. He wears a cloth draped around his hips, and leans toward a kneeling figure, Saint John, at his left, who raises a hand above his head in a gesture of baptism. On the bank of the river behind and on either side of this holy pair stands another crowd, busily watching this scene. In the far background, hills and a town are depicted in thin, faint line to indicate their distance.
