Drawing, Inkstand for the Viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais of Italy

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Giuseppe Barberi. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, graphite, on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This drawing shows that the architect Barberi, who produced the surtout de table design shown across the room, also designed for Eugène de Beauharnais, possibly when Eugène was viceroy of Italy and the likely owner of the surtout de table in the center of the gallery. Both show strong classical references.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors.

Its dimensions are

42.7 x 31.8 cm (16 13/16 x 12 1/2 in.) Mat: 55.9 × 40.6 cm (22 × 16 in.)
