Drawing, Design for Embroidery, Gentleman's Waistcoat Pocket

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Fabrique de Saint Ruf. It is dated ca. 1785 and we acquired it in 1925. Its medium is brush and gouache, watercolor, and graphite on cream laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Nestled between the pocket flap and an outer border of large flower clusters are two vignettes showing a tranquil scene of stone houses and a bridge surrounded by tall trees. This design may have appealed to a gentleman yearning for a quieter life in the country.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

20.6 × 32 cm (8 1/8 × 12 5/8 in.)

Inscribed in pen and brown ink, upper center: P 2136; in graphite, verso: C Hai (?)
