Sidewall, The Horse Fair

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1855–75 and we acquired it in 1928. Its medium is machine printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Wallpaper based on the famous painting “The Horse Fair” by French artist Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) showing the horse market on the Boulevard de l’Hôpital in Paris. The large scene copying the painting alternates with two smaller scenes, each having the appearance of being matted and framed in a bead and reel molding.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
