Textile (France)

This is a Textile. It is dated 1760–1769 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is silk and metal-wrapped silk-core threads and its technique is plain weave with supplementary warp patterning and discontinuous supplementary weft (brocading). It is a part of the Textiles department.

This sumptuous silk shows how skilled 18th-century French weavers were in the production of textiles for the luxury market. With its characteristic rococo patterning, this confection of a dress fabric has its S-curves trimmed with the black-tipped tails of ermine, a fur typically reserved for the coronation robes of royal figures.

This object was donated by Eleanor Garnier Hewitt and Sarah Cooper Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt, from the textile collection of Mrs. Abram Stevens Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

H x W (a): 101.6 × 54 cm (40 in. × 21 1/4 in.) H x W (b): 99.7 × 54.3 cm (39 1/4 × 21 3/8 in.) H x W (c): 99.7 × 54.3 cm (39 1/4 × 21 3/8 in.)
