Side Chair (France)

This is a side chair. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is carved and joined mahogany-veneered wood, tapestry (seat, back). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This chair represents the type of dining chair used at Malmaison and other residences where Napoleon ate. The needlework is original and the “N”, which resembles other known examples, could be associated with Napoleon.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Decorative box made out of granulated, cast, and chased three-color gold. Its use is for storing powdered tobacco. The sides of its body are textured with wave-like patterns. Leaf designs stand out in relief from the corners. The box has a solid rectangular lid. Its edges are outlined with shiny gold. On the sides are floral, leaf, and swirling patterns, debossed from the surface of the lid. The center has a large letter ”N” formed with silver-set old-mine cut diamonds. The letter is on top of a dark blue square with a patterned gold border followed by a thin black border.
