Drawing, Floating Icebergs

This is a Drawing. It was created by Frederic Edwin Church. It is dated July 1, 1859 and we acquired it in 1917. Its medium is graphite, brush and white gouache on blue-green wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Between bouts of seasickness, Church produced nearly 100 studies of icebergs during his 6-week arctic expedition. Immersed in the pristine landscape, he was entranced by the eerie, translucent beauty of the floating ice.

Here, amidst an array of delicately rendered icebergs, Church describes their forms as “strange” and “supernatural.”

This object was donated by Louis P. Church. It is credited Gift of Louis P. Church.
