Cameo Brooch And Bracelet (Italy)
This is a Cameo brooch and bracelet. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is carved shells, gold, cut velvet. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This black velvet bracelet, made in Italy, is decorated by a central oval cameo flanked on each side by three smaller cameos, all of gold- mounted shell. All seven have been designed with paired portraits of gods and goddesses with their attributes. From left to right, the cameos show Cupid and Psyche, Apollo and Diana, Minerva and Mercury, Jupiter and Juno, Proserpina and Pluto, Venus and Mars, and personifications of night (Nyx) and day (Hemera). The theme of mythological lovers suggests this suite was a present to a loved one.
