End piece from canape confident or 3-sectioned upholstered sofa Chair

This is a chair. It was made by Louis Magdaleine Pluvinet. It is dated ca. 1780 and we acquired it in 1967. Its medium is gilded wood, fabric. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Rodman A. Heeren.

A Gondola-formed French antique sofa identified as a canape carved from Indian rosewood and rosewood veneer, with brass trim, two visible brass cubic feet and linen velvet upholstery. The rims and front of the frame are covered in veneer with a trompe l'oeil effect of basket weaving or a standard brick formation with brass trim bordering the design. The inner sofa displays several sections of upholstery secured to the frame with piping outlining all edges. The inner back has a horizontally placed section of cushioned linen velvet surrounded by two inner arm sections. In between all upholstery is the exposed rosewood of the frame. An inner bottom section with an unstable seat cushion extends past the edges of the bottom and up the inner sides a short distance. Two brass feet, equally spaced, are under the front of the piece. The photograph captures the canape in a frontal view or elevation view against a light gray wall situated on a platform of the same color showing a cast shadow beneath and to the right.
