Armchair (Austria)
This is a Armchair. It was manufactured by Gebrüder (Brothers) Thonet. It is dated ca. 1860 and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is beechwood, rattan. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Founded by the German cabinet maker Michael Thonet (1796–1871), the firm of Thonet Brothers perfected and patented a steam process for bending wood that could also be standardized for a larger consumer market. The pared-down, curvilinear forms of the bentwood elements, as seen in this chair, combine to create an almost modern simplicity. Several models have become classics, remaining in continuous production for over a century.
