Sampler (USA)

This is a Sampler. It was embroidered by Mary B. Tyrrell. It is dated 1817 and we acquired it in 1974. Its medium is silk, plain weave and its technique is stem, satin, knot stitching; long floating stitching for foliage; faces, hands and background painted. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Unknown. It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor from the Fraser/Martin Collection.

It is inscribed

"In memory of Mrs. Susannah Chandler. Died August 28th, 1811. Aged 56 years." Inscribed in gold on black matt at bottom: Mary B. Tyrrell, 1817 Written on back of frame" "Wanamaker, dated 1817. 30. (dollars)".
