This is a matchsafe. It was manufactured by William & Andrew Smith. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is wood, printed paper, ivory. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Possible maker's mark stamped in gold on middle center of box, just above lower edge of lid; "Prince Charlie" stamped in gold on middle center of box, just below upper edge of box body.
