Frieze, Stamford

This is a Frieze. It was designed by Albert Warner and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated ca. 1903 and we acquired it in 1955. Its medium is block-printed and stenciled paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

A leading producer of artistic wallpapers, Jeffrey & Company commissioned designs from Walter Crane. In 1872, the company introduced the horizontal division of the wall into three sections: a frieze (such as this design) at the top, a filling below, and a dado that ran from skirting level almost to the floor. This block-printed example, created by Albert Warner, son of the company’s founder, shows stylized rose bushes overlapping an inverted heart.

Clear glass vase-shaped carafe with long flared neck widening into round belly, then narrowing into flared foot. The carafe is painted with plants and flowers. At the foot, an X pattern of red-brown stems leads up into green-gold blades of foliage on the belly. At the base of the neck, a collar of white and gold five-petal flowers, with round green leaves. At the rim, a scalloped and dotted gold design.

A square cushion cover with embroidered design. Over a blue central medallion, five pale pink five-petal roses on a shared pink stem, with twining yellow-green leaves. The roses are surrounded by a wreath of pale green oak leaves outlined in pink on a green diamond-patterned background. The colors of the embroidery are repeated in the wavy fringe.

A square white linen napkin with a design in light blue. A border of stylized lollipop-shaped trees and heart-shaped flowers is framed by wavy streams with small swimming fish. Curving, ornamental lines create small panels between the trees. The tops of the trees point in toward the central panel, where smaller trees anchored in sinuous lines are arranged in alternate rows with wavy spade-leaved plants. A white monogram is stitched in the upper right corner of the central panel.
