A photographic print on sensitized paper of the Hotel Guimard, depicts the residence of Hector Guimard and his wife. It is inscribed in stylized letttering on the top of the Page, Print No 7, facade elevation of Hotel Guimard 122 Rue Mozart, Paris ca 1910. It is signed on the bottom right DRESSEE PAR’LARCHITECT SOUSSIGNER/ Hector Guimard. The print reveals a narrow facade of a four story building made of brick and limestone. The building is a complex design of both art nouveau and traditional features but is filled with unconventional decorations and abstractions to create a sense of whimsy and unorthodoxy. A very simple rooftop design sits in contrast to the elaborate design of the brick and limestone building. The high pitched rooftop is shown with irregular angles and planes. It appears to be depicted with high stylization and asymmetry. The three brick and limestone chimneys, are of various shapes and sizes and are arranged with no symmetry or sense of true functionalism. Lines of smoke, billow up from the chimneys in abstracted tree-like formations which make the chimneys appear to morph into planters. On the left, the pitched roof terminates in a pointed and angled horizontal conical plane-where it meets another angled section of rooftop which continues to the right side of the roof structure. There, the high pitched roof line bends to a rounded curve created by an arched or ogee dormer window (derivational perhaps medevil). Below the dormer the plane of the roof ends in a soft subtle curve. The central portion of the roof ( actually off center) there is a noteable trapezoidal projection and canopy, below which are two doors that could be likened to barnyard doors. Ornate abstracted designed lanterns contrast to the simplicity of the roof and hang from the horizontal piping of the roof eaves. On the left facade below the conical structure of the roof is a recessed wall of brick with four key shaped windows ( like slit window) that are set in a vertical column and represent the four floors of the house.. As the view descends there is brick and stone work -steps- either architecturally placed , decorative, or representing the interior of the house, all leading below, to a narrow brick and limestone two doored entrance-way on the ground floor. The major section of the elevation shows a brick and limestone four story building with a balcony on the top floor. The balustrade is made from cast bronze and is intricate and elegant with art nouveau abstracted details of arabesques and vegetal designs. Leading to the balcony are formal arched french doors with medallions of glass and which are framed in limestone. To the far left of the balcony is a niche( or small window) flanked on either side by intricately designed lanterns. On floor three there are two large double door windows or shutters and with limestone trim. (It appears that the limestone may be a support to the balcony?) Metal work on each window demonstrates the energy of the art nouveau dynamics. The third window (to the left) appears smaller and without symmetry or pairing to the other windows of that level and is more curvalinear. On the level below and at the right corner is a smaller rounded and very decorative balcony with intricate metal work and that projects out to the right from that view of the house. Highly embellished metal work of this balustrade, gives one the impression that it opens to the most important room of the house. As well, while most of the exterior of the facade is brick work, this area from the third level down, is shown in limestone. Below the level below the balcony is a smaller but highly stylized and embellished window. Below is panels of limestone leading to the ground floor where there is grill work covering an entrance or window. To the left view of the facade on floor three, There is a small window without the elegance of the two window to its right. A vertical structure like pipe or (vegetal stalk design element), stems down from the center of this window to the two levels of windows, below. The pipe or (stalk) structure resolves onto the limestone finish of the formal entrance way. This impressive formal entrance way appears to have a crown of intricately designed brasswork which appear as two swags or garlands which lead off a central wreath. A canopy of glass with thrusts of curvalinear designs sits above the main entrance which is a double glass door. Linear metal work with thrusting, curvaceous lines appear to emanate from the doors’ center. On the base of the glass doors is intricate metal design work, perhaps in vegetal design scheme. There are two vertical poles which lead from the base of the canopy down to the entrance-way. Four steps lead up to the threshold and there is a curvalinear design at the foot of entrance-way. On the level below and at the right corner is a small and very decorative balcony that is ornate and with intricate metal work and that projects out from that view of the house. Highly embellished metal work of this balustrade, gives one the impression that it opens to the most important room of the house. As well, while most of the exterior of the facade is brick work, this area from the third level down, is shown in limestone. There is a small window below and then an arched window which may exist below the ground floor.
