Scarab (USA)

This is a Scarab. It was overseen (as design director) by Louis Comfort Tiffany and produced by Tiffany Studios. It is dated ca. 1910 and we acquired it in 1958. Its medium is mold-blown favrile glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Egyptian motif of the scarab, a symbol of self-renewal, experienced great popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thousands of glass scarabs were produced at Tiffany’s Corona, New York factory and inset into jewelry, metalwork, and ceramic vases, as seen here.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of K.R. Gerry.

A horizontal cast silver brooch in the shape of a scarab beetle with its wings spread on either side. The wings contain eight drop-shaped enamel panels of iridescent blue and green, while the central body is enameled in a vibrant blue. Two silver antennae curl from the top of the beetle's head to adjoin with the outstretched wings.

Multi-colored beaded bag of cotton, glass and metal beads in the Egyptian style of objects found in Tutankhamen’s tomb. The design is of a lotus flower motif with a winged scarab near the top. The pocketbook is oblong but comes to a point at the bottom where there are five equally spaced beaded tassels. The purse closes with a drawstrings and the beading is in black, blue, green, orange, yellow and silvery grey. The same design covers both the front and back.
