Fragment Of Bed Hanging (France)

This is a Fragment of bed hanging. It was manufactured by Clerambault. It is dated 1796–1810 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is linen and its technique is needle lace with ground of loop and twist with twist return. It is a part of the Textiles department.

An often cited example of Napoleon's lace commissions is the set of bed furnishings which he ordered for his wife, Josephine. Due to the length of time it took to complete the large laces and to Napoleon's change of wives, the set was completed for his Empress, Marie Louise of Austria whom he married in 1810. The set consisted of a ceiling canopy, a pair of curtains, a bed cover and a valance (of which this is a small section) and is now divided among several museums in the United States.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Malmaison Bed Furnishings.

This object was bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf (American, 1887–1961). It is credited Bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf in memory of his mother, Adeline Emma Greenleaf.
