A length of fabric with a deep blue background and a stylized, symmetrical floral design in rich, muted colors. A rose vine in a curving diamond shape, with thorns and leaves, creates the framework of the pattern. The light green vines are accented with alternating light red and pale pink roses at the 'corners' or points of intersection. Enclosed within the vines are tulip forms, alternating in light yellow-green and pale orange, with curving, light green leaves.

Textile, Tulip and Rose, 1893

This is a Textile. It was designed by William Morris and manufactured by Morris & Co.. It is dated 1893 and we acquired it in 1964. Its medium is cotton warp, silk wefts and its technique is 1/7 twill with complementary weft patterning. It is a part of the Textiles department.

At a time when it was fashionable to plant rare, exotic species, Morris believed that native and naturalized British plants, trees, and flowers, such as roses and tulips, were enough to create a beautiful composition. Both his garden and textile designs
drew inspiration from medieval and Tudor-style patterning and motifs. In Tulip and Rose, the flowers’ pattern of growth appears as organic strapwork.

A stylized illustration of a ffigure in a dress and flowers walking in the woods. The plane here is very shallow, as the hills and the oak tree forest seem to meet right behind their shoulders. Arms outstretched and mid-stride, they looks to the right, dress flowing among the rolling hills. The drawing is in a square frame surrounded by dense folilage pattern. On facing page is the same sized square with red and black ink text written in an elaborate gothic font, also framed by the same foliage pattern. The initial letter of the text is the letter 'A,' echoing the same elaborate font and foliage pattern. The red font reads, 'Chapter 1. Of Golden Walter and His Father.'
