Sampler (England)

This is a Sampler. It is dated 1657 and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is linen and its technique is withdrawn element work with needle lace fillings, satin, cross, back, and double running stitches on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was bequest of Mrs. Henry E. Coe. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. Henry E. Coe.

A vertically-oriented textile with a center panel and a wide border on each long side, with geometric forms in shades of blue. The center panel has blue and white check with white threads withdrawn in a pattern of concentric diamonds repeating throughout. The inner diamonds along the center are solid blue, while the remaining are bordered with a lighter shade in the interior. The left and right borders have three blue and white parallel bands that form lines, with the plain weave cloth visible as yellow stripes in between. Each band contains a rotated triangle patterns in dark blue; the effect is almost pinwheel-like.
