Sidewall (USA)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1875–1906 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is block printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Popularized by Owen Jones this style of design shows Middle Eastern influence and is similar to arabesque designs found in the Alhambra. Exoticism and the use of metallic gold pigment were highly favored during the later nineteenth century. This arabesque design incorporates both, with the overlapping and intertwined foliage being made more prominent by the gold fill.

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program and Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Funds.
