Textile (France)

This is a Textile. It was made by C. Widmer. It is dated 1820 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block printed in red on a plain weave foundation that had been dyed gold. a mark where the fabric was secured from the gold dye bath is at both of the lower corners. woven with one band of heavier weft at the bottom of the fabric. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was bequest of Elinor Merrell. It is credited Bequest of Elinor Merrell.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 38.5 cm (15 1/4 in.) Weft: 91 cm (35 3/4 in.). Both selvedges present. Pattern: Visual and technical repeats are of a different size. Height of technical repeat: 26.5 cm (10 1/2 in.). Width: 14 cm (5 1/2 in.). Measurements were taken from block registration marks.

It is inscribed

"C.WIDMER NEVEU DE FEU OBERKAMPF, DE JOUY. FABRICANT DE TOILES PEINTES BON TEINT" and at left "MANUF.re ET BLANCHISSERIE A CORBEIL." in red within compartments in the same red frame. "D1", "3", "WAGENSAIL" (backward slant to the 'N') within frame, "ROUGE.OR" all in red. In lighter red "650", "13", "24", AND "18". There is indication (red mark on the fringe) that at one time there had been another mark on the piece.
