Rangoon Teapot

This is a teapot. It was manufactured by Francis J. Emery. It is dated ca. 1878–85 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is glazed earthenware with transfer-printed decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

These ceramic objects are examples of the types of aesthetically sophisticated wares available to those with a modest income. All feature elements of Japanese design vocabulary: cranes, flowering branches, fans, mountainous landscapes, arabesque patterns, medallions, cross-hatched decoration, waves, an asymmetrical arrangement, and more.

This object was donated by Brooklyn Museum. It is credited Gift of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Paul F. Walter Collection.
