Press Mat For Industrial Lamination Process, Copsil Gold™ Press Mat

This is a Press mat for industrial lamination process. It was designed by Mel Douglas and manufactured by Marathon Belting Ltd.. It is dated designed 1994, manufactured 2005 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is brass, copper, silicone and its technique is herringbone twill weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The Copsil Gold™ Press Mat was designed by Mel Douglas in 1994 and manufactured by Marathon Belting Ltd. in 2005. It is made of a woven brass and copper fabric and is used as a press mat for industrial lamination processes. A silicone elastomer in the weft helps to prevent the weave from becoming deformed under compression. The textile’s structure is crucial to its performance. The herringbone twill weave produces a flat surface with high brass content to maximize thermal efficiency, while the reversal of the herringbone balances the spring of the elastomer to prevent the mat from shifting during the lamination process.

The Copsil Gold™ Press Mat demonstrates the strength of these fibers and textile structure while showing the unintended intrinsic beauty of industrial textiles. For all of these qualities, it was included in the 2005 exhibition Extreme Textiles: Designing for High Performance and is now recommended for acquisition. The museum’s collection contains historic and contemporary examples of this type of textile structure, but this particular example is noteworthy in that it was designed for a purely industrial application.
