Handbag Watch

This is a watch. It was manufactured by Westclox. It is dated ca. 1933 and we acquired it in 2008. Its medium is bakelite (tm), glass, metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

A standing pocket watch carved from gently striated coral in a thick round form. A square dial is inserted into the coral and surrounded in black enamel with two screws diagonally set on upper right and lower left corners. Arabic numerals follow the square edges with number 12 taking the traditional place of upper center on the dial with a gold crown placed above. Minute lines are visible on the right and bottom sides only, and narrow lines of dirt appear in the same areas as if the face has shifted to the left and top where the minute lines disappear. Hands made of blued-steel are centered and the dial is white enamel. The photograph captures the pocket watch in a ⅞ view and a reflection is visible against a white surface.
