Sampler (England)

This is a Sampler. It is dated 1846 and we acquired it in 2008. Its medium is silk embroidery on linen foundation and its technique is buttonhole, running and knotted stitches on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by William H. Mathers and Myra Mathers. It is credited Gift of Myra M. and William H. Mathers.

Its dimensions are

Frame H x W: 19.4 x 20 cm (7 5/8 x 7 7/8 in.)

It has the following markings

On the back of the frame is a hanging wire and two eye hooks. It is covered with brown paper on which there are four stickers which read [descriptions in brackets belong to the author of this report]: N No. 90 CG No. 219 Buttonhole Sampler: signed M.T. 1846 English [white sticker with a double red line boarder; typed; 3” x 5”] 179 32.50 Ulercur Audurai Galleries 1846 Button Hole Sampler – American 2 samplers sold Chelliuhaue Fewale orfhau Asylum school of Industry 1805 [white sticker with a red boarder; hand written; 2 3/8” x 3 7/8”; appears thick and may have been cut off the back of a different frame and applied to this one] Mrs. R.
