Bag (USA)
This is a Bag. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is silk, glass beads and its technique is beaded knitting. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Decorative beadwork became increasingly popular in the nineteenth century. This small drawstring pouch with a scene of two men fishing is very likely a man’s tobacco pouch. Worked by women, tobacco pouches typically depict what were considered masculine activities such as card playing, hunting and fishing. The weight of the glass beads when solidly knit together using fine silk thread made this technique most suitable for the production of smaller accessories such purses, pouches and needle cases. Many bags and purses of this period show the influence of Berlin work patterns, which were printed on point paper and distributed across Europe and North America.
It is credited Gift of Mary S. M. Gibson.
Its dimensions are
H x W: 18.5 x 15 cm (7 5/16 x 5 7/8 in.)
