Sidewall (France)
This is a sidewall. It is dated 1825 and we acquired it in 1948. Its medium is block printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Intricate pattern imitating an irisé, or rainbow paper. The irisé technique was created by the Zuber company in 1819 and involved an elaborate system of painting and brushing to create a blended pigment effect. This design copies the look of the color blending but upon close inspection it becomes apparent each of the colors is printed with a separate woodblock and there is no shading of colors.
