Drawing, Garden with Classical Buildings and a Fountain
This is a Drawing. It was created by Isaac de Moucheron. It is dated 1743 and we acquired it in 1986. Its medium is pen and brown ink, brush and watercolor, black chalk on white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Large landscape paintings of fantasy gardens were fashionable in eighteenth-century Holland. This watercolor drawing by the Amsterdam-born artist Isaac de Moucheron depicts an imaginary Italianate garden filled with classical architecture and statuary. In the 1690’s, Moucheron traveled to Rome, where his balanced landscape views earned him the nickname Ordonnantie (“the arranger”). This beautiful and strictly symmetrical composition could have been collected as a cabinet picture or may have been used for a larger wall design.
