Teapot Teapot

This is a teapot. It was designed by Chunghi Choo and made by Chunghi Choo. It is dated 1988 and we acquired it in 1992. Its medium is silver-plated copper, anodized aluminum, onyx. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Choo creates vessels intended to add heightened sensuousness and a feeling of celebration to daily life. Choo says of this piece that the “handle and knob are three-dimensional transcriptions of strokes of my brush calligraphy; sweeping movements of my brush . . . give [my work] a flowing line of energy.”

An ornate and abstracted floral and petal designed brass and gold door pull. A high central flurry of ringlets and abstract florets sit atop a concaved central plane which is embellished with minute swirls of abstracted whirls and curls and which are layered with abstracted foliage carvings. The edges of the central panel scroll out like a petal of a flower but it is abstracted and asymetrical. The tightly swirled and ringlet bud like forms fall within the layered planes of the concave central panel. Projecting from this panel are abstracted, tightly curled and linear forms that appear to pass through other abstracted sections of more bud like forms and that finally root into the panel of its base. Although made of brass and gold its formations appear as malleable as clay. The work is inspired by nature and it is Art Nouveau.
