Sculptura Chair

This is a chair. It was designed by Joseph Hardwell Woodard. It is dated ca. 1956 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is enameled and woven wrought iron wire, enameled wrought iron. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Wire chairs proliferated in the 1950s due to emerging technologies and new materials. Woodard’s wire chair is composed entirely of black wire mesh, welded and molded to fit the contours of the human form. This shape was popularized in the postwar organic design movement in an effort to make modernist furniture more comfortable and personable to consumers.

It is credited Gift in honor of Lee L. Woodard, Sadie Greenman Woodard, their sons and their wives, Joseph and Virginia, Russell and Annabelle, and Lyman and Jane.
