Water Pitcher (Austro-Hungarian Empire (Klostermühle))

This is a Water pitcher. It was designed by Karl Massanetz and manufactured by J. & L. Lobmeyr.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from J. & L. Lobmeyr GmbH as part of Making Design.

It is dated 1913–14 and we acquired it in 2009. Its medium is mouth-blown colorless glass, black ink feather-pen drawing with gilding. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Massanetz’s water pitcher is of blown glass with applied handles. The surface is decorated with black-pen painting and gold decoration, a technique refined in Steinschönau, in northern Bohemia. The intricate, lace-inspired design radiates symmetrically from the middle of the body, creating a kaleidoscope of pattern and detail.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Dale and Doug Anderson, Anonymous Donor, Arthur Liu, and Prairie Pictures, Inc. and from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
