Garden Seat

This is a Garden seat. It was manufactured by Mintons. It is dated ca. 1880 and we acquired it in 1983. Its medium is molded, glazed and gilded earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. It is credited Gift from the Thomas W. Evans Collection from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

Two-tiered architectural stool completely encrusted with white salt crystals. Four tapered, spiral-wrapped legs support horizontal, circular tiers. The bottom tier is wheel-shaped with eight equally spaced knobs protruding from the outer edge. Four short posts connect this bottom tier to the flat-capped top tier. The rough textures of the white and pale yellow-grey salt crystals sparkle in the light. The stool stands on a smooth grey concrete floor, with a rough white wall in the background.
