Drawing, Study 146#2, Chart Showing Form and Value of Notes from Aural to Space Keys

This is a Drawing. It was designed by John De Cesare. It is dated April 29, 1965 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Time value, or duration, of musical notes is indicated in this chart. De Cesare refers to this as the process of translating the aural keys (the tradtional notes of a musical score) into space keys (the visual design form of the musical notes which he used in all his drawings).
Using the basic note form of a triangle (illustrated in Study 146), he increases or decreases its width, depending on the time value of a note. For instance a full note ( ) is 4 inches wide; a half-note ( ) is 2 inches wide; a quarter note ( ) is 1 inch wide. In this drawing he has illustrated the time value from full notes (at the top) to sixty-fourth notes (at the bottom). At the bottom of the drawing are examples of Chords in 2, 3, and 4 tones (dark and light purple).
There are three measures of notes in this drawing, one measure for each column.
Column 1 represents notes in the Bass Clef
light blue = stems up
dark blue = stems down
Columns 2 and 3 represent notes in the Treble Clef
Column 2: light purple = stems up, dark purple = stems down
Column 3: light green = stems up, dark green = stems down
